Ex-soldiers offer brutally honest accounts of their service in the Israel Defense Forces, known as the “school of the nation”. The men being interviewed are naked, just as Israel is naked.
All Israelis are drafted into the army at the age of 18. Unlike women, who are allowed to do alternative service, men who fail to complete compulsory military service are often socially ostracized – even today. In this film, ex-soldiers openly discuss their time in the Israeli Defense Forces, known as the “school of the nation”. They talk about how their understanding of gender, sexuality, allegiance and guilt has shaped their lives. This is an unvarnished account of reality in Israel in the present day. Without compromise, without whitewashing. It isn’t just the men being interviewed who are naked – all of Israel is, too.
